Interview with music producer Datura

19-year-old Belgium-based producer Datura had begun making his own music since he was 8 years old. He played on the synthesizers at home. In 2014 Datura only really started creating full tracks and uploading them to the internet.

Datura had experimented and had created many different genres of music, for example, Datura had mostly created EDM until he found his passion for wave music,  the one which is where he feels most at home.

Looking back, what were some of your earliest entries into music appreciation? And music production?

My dad used to make music himself. He started teaching me when I was only 8 years old. I used to play on the synthesizers at home with him and a couple years later I started to experiment in FL Studio trying to make my own music but it was all still very basic. It wasn’t until 2014 that I really started to make full tracks and upload them to the internet.

What inspired you to start making the electronic music that you are now?

I was mostly making basic EDM before I discovered the wave scene. I came across it on YouTube and I immediately fell in love with the genre and wanted to make music like that myself. So here I am!

What key pieces of gear/software are you using to define your sound?

I use FL Studio and a couple of VSTs such as Serum, Omnisphere, Spire, Sylenth1, Massive, etc. I also have a couple of real synths such as my Juno 106 and Roland SH-201. I also have my Alesis v61 midi controller for controlling an recording all my VSTs and a set of Pioneer monitors as well as my Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro for mixing

Has your arsenal of equipment changed much since you first started?

A little bit. I had all the real synths already from my dad and I used to make stuff on a cheap laptop but I upgraded to a powerful desktop PC now. We used to have this ‘studio’ in the attic but it’s now my bedroom and I have my own little set up there now.

Which three albums or artists would you say have influenced your sound in a big way?

Øfdream, Burial, and FORXST have been really big influences for me from the very start.

Any new or upcoming artists on your radar?

Keep an eye out for my boy Blanku! He’s been in the game for a while but he’s not getting the attention he deserves. His music is so good though!

What inspires you outside of music?

Emotions. I process a lot if not all my emotions through music and It’s super obvious to me how much easier it is for me to make music when I get my heart broken or go through other heavy stuff in life.

What do you want to accomplish with your music?

I don’t really have a goal set to be honest. It’s super nice to have people listen to your stuff from different places in the world and if it can help people with certain things in their lives than I would probably consider that as an accomplishment. Other than that I guess I just want it to be my legacy later. I put a lot of emotions in my tracks and in a way the music is always a piece of me. So I hope to keep on living through my music when it’s my time to go.

What, in your opinion would be the perfect genre fusion?
Wave combined with witch house has always been my favorite fusion!

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or releases in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

There might be an EP coming soon. I’ve been sitting on a couple of unreleased tracks for a while and I might just put them together and release it as an EP. Who knows.

Famous last words?

“lost in a world that doesn’t exist.”
